In April 2022, actor and writer Lynn Beaumont lost her husband, best friend, writing and business partner to cancer after a short illness.

Her world changed overnight.

She was terrified of everything — living alone, the dark, grief, and remembering which day the bins went out. “I was terrified of not knowing how to process the grief,” she says. “I’d read some very scary stories about unprocessed grief and I didn’t want it to become a casualty of mine.”

She tried therapy, but initially struggled to find someone she connected with, so she started writing. It was initially a way of making sense of what had happened. Then an idea began to emerge: What if she wrote a stand-up show about grief?

There was only one problem. She had never done stand-up.

An actor by profession, she was used to working with other people — not standing alone on stage with a microphone and her own material. “My daughter thankfully pointed out that stand-up is a brutal world, and that being a stand up wasn’t the goal, sharing my story was.”

So she carried on writing. On planes. On trains. On beaches. On park benches. Whenever a thought, memory or feeling surfaced, she wrote it down.

Over the following couple of years, the material developed into a full-length performance, and Big Girl Pants was born.

Then, in a rather unlikely twist, the show found its first opportunity.

“After a couple of margaritas, I found myself chatting to a man on the train home from London. He turned out to be the programmer for the Chesham Fringe Festival.”

She mentioned the play and he suggested she send it to him. That conversation led to her first performance in May 2026, which her daughter, actor Charlotte Beaumont, directed.

Since then, Big Girl Pants has continued to gather momentum, with 2 London dates at Lower Marsh Arts Club and a special performance at Woodoaks Farm in Rickmansworth in October. “Our aim is to take the show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2027.”

Described as “hilarious and heartbreaking,” the show tackles some of life's most difficult subjects — cancer, death, grief and trauma — while finding the absurdity and humour that can exist alongside them.

Because talking about death doesn't make it happen any sooner.

And talking about grief doesn't make it disappear.

But how grief is the love we had for another person.

Big Girl Pants is ultimately a story about resilience, finding laughter in the darkest places, and discovering how resilient we are as humans.
