Centurion Mr Choudhury’s Ramadan Walk to Raise Money for Virus Victims

UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 04, 2020 / Following hot on the footsteps of Captain Tom Moore, fellow centurion and proud east ender Dabirul Islam Choudhury, a 100-year-old commonwealth Briton, is currently walking laps of his communal garden to raise money for the Ramadan Family Commitment (RFC) to support the victims of COVID-19.

Mr Choudhury, who is currently fasting for Ramadan, initially made a pledge to raise £1,000 on Sunday 26th April for the victims of COVID-19. He intended to complete walking 100 laps of the garden and hit his £1,000 target within the first 9 hours of setting up a JustGiving page. He has since raised more than £40,000.

Mr Choudhury has committed to continue his walk as long as British people continue donating.

He says: “Thank you for your donations. I’m not fighting alone to put a smile on the faces of hungry children, we are fighting together. This money will help desperate and grieving families in the UK, Bangladesh and many other countries. We have a strong tradition of generosity in Britain to support our fellow citizens here and our fellow human beings abroad.”

Born in 1920, Mr Choudhury witnessed the horrors of World War 2 and a generation of brave men and women defeat fascism. He witnessed the birth of India, Pakistan, and then Bangladesh. From Bangladesh, he came to the UK in the 1950s for further education and currently lives in the east end of London, Bow.

Mr Choudhury will donate the money to RFC (Ramadan Family Commitment), an initiative by satellite television station Channel S. The donations will be distributed equally amongst Channel S charitable partner organisations who are working UK-wide and internationally.

Amongst the charities RFC has partnered up with are Eden Care and the East London Mosque. Eden Care is supporting UK families who have lost loved ones to COVID-19 with burial costs and the East London Mosque is providing food packages for struggling families in London.
