UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / August 18, 2026 / While Christmas may feel a long way off, many retailers and manufacturers are already placing stock orders for the festive period, with lead times through August and September increasingly dictating when goods need to be ready. Pallet Trucks UK says this early ordering cycle brings a quieter, less visible ramp-up in warehouse activity - well before the more obvious peak trading rush later in the year.
According to the company, this early stage is often when handling equipment first starts to feel the strain, but it's rarely given the same attention as the busier weeks around Black Friday and Christmas itself.
Stock is arriving, being checked in, and moved into storage in growing volumes - all while day-to-day operations carry on as normal. Businesses that assume their pallet trucks, stackers and lift tables will simply cope with this extra load, without checking, can find themselves dealing with breakdowns and delays just as things are starting to build.
Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Pallet Trucks UK, said, "There's a real gap between when businesses start preparing for Christmas and when most people think 'peak season' actually begins.
Orders are already going out now, stock is already starting to arrive, and that means warehouses are already working harder than they were a month ago, even if it doesn't look that way from the outside.
"The mistake we see most often is treating this early ramp-up as business as usual, right up until equipment problems appear later on. Wheels wear, hydraulics need checking, batteries need proper care, and none of that gets easier when you're relying on the same kit for months of increased use.
"Our advice is simple: don't wait until October or November to think about whether your handling equipment is ready. If it's carrying more stock now than it was in July, that's worth acting on straight away, not once things are already at their busiest.
"It's a much easier conversation to have in August, when there's still time to service, replace or add to a fleet, than it is in December, when a breakdown can mean missed deliveries at the worst possible moment."
