EU Allows Phenylene Bis-Diphenyltriazine as a UV Filter in Some Cosmetics

The European Commission has allowed another UV filter to be incorporated into some cosmetic products. From May 22, 2019, manufacturers have been allowed to use Phenylene Bis-Diphenyltriazine – 3,3’-(1,4-Phenylene)bis(5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine) – in sunscreens and other cosmetics products up to a maximum concentration of 5%.

The decision, published on April 30, 2019 as Regulation (EU) 2019/680, follows opinion SCCS/1594/18 of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), issued on July 30, 2018. Annex VI to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 has accordingly been amended.

Stakeholders should be aware that this provision only applies to dermally applied products and does not cover products where there is a risk of inhalation.
