LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / August 28, 2020 / Recent travel restrictions have made it really difficult for many of us to find somewhere new and exciting to visit. However, the UK is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, so it’s no wonder so many of them feature in our much-loved TV favourites! From the rolling hills of West Yorkshire seen in the crime dramas Happy Valley and Heartbeat, to Doc Martin’s surgery in scenic Cornwall and the famous Barry Island where the cast of Gavin and Stacey shot much of the show.
In this guide, we uncover more than 50 outdoor British TV locations across the UK. So you can relive your favourite scenes whilst simultaneously social distancing and enjoying our country’s unique beauty.
Luther - Hampstead, North London
The psychological crime drama, Luther, first hit our screens in 2010, when Hampstead Heath in North London provided the creepy woodland backdrop where Dr Vivien Lake takes a wander at night. Boasting an impressive 320 hectares of land, this stunning greenspace is perfect for a bit of fresh air and a break from the hustle and bustle of city life upon a visit to London.
Peaky Blinders - Cheshire
The gripping period crime drama Peaky Blinders was mainly filmed in Leeds. But when Tommy Shelby moves to a mansion in the country, it's actually Cheshire's Arley Hall and Gardens, which is the perfect spot for a day trip when visiting the area. If you fancy having a ‘peak’ (excuse the pun), why not explore this stunning house to see where the likes of actor Cillian Murphy performed? Entrance to the Hall & Gardens costs £13.50, with a Child pass costing £6.
Taggart - Glasgow
Taggart was one of the longest-running dramas in British TV history, and followed a group of detectives in Strathclyde Police. The original title card used a shot taken from the summit of Cathkin Braes overlooking the south of Glasgow city. Cathkin Braes Country Park covers almost 500 acres, with the summit reaching 200 metres above sea level. If you’re planning a trip to Scotland, this is a great spot for a scenic and very socially distanced walk.
Sex Education - Herefordshire
The refreshingly honest comedy-drama Sex Education explores bold topics and themes we can all relate to. Otis' house can be found in the village of Symonds Yat in Herefordshire. "The Chalet" is even available for hire as a holiday home. A visit to see this stunning house and its surroundings is definitely worthwhile for any fans of the show.
Broadchurch - Dorset
Fans of the crime drama Broadchurch will instantly recognise the breathtaking cliffs and beaches of West Bay that appear throughout the series. This location makes a truly idyllic backdrop for a socially distanced walk or beach day in the county of Dorset.
Game of Thrones - County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Although it may not technically be a British series, many scenes from Game of Thrones were in fact filmed in the UK. The most striking of all being this amazing beauty spot in County Antrim. Here, Ballintoy Harbour was the prime location for the show's Lordsport Harbour and Pyke. On a visit here, you’ll be reminded of Theon Greyjoy’s famous return to the iron islands where he first meets his sister, Yara.
Midsomer Murders - Dorchester on Thames, Oxfordshire
If you’re looking to visit somewhere a little ‘off the beaten track’, why not explore the quaint historical village of Dorchester on Thames. This quiet village is a great spot for a socially distanced weekend away, with it’s charming timber-framed houses, rolling hills and peaceful rivers and locks. And don’t worry - the village's crime rate is a lot lower in real life than on the show!
