Fancy surviving the AI apocalypse?

LONDON, UK / AGILITYPR.NEWS / October 23, 2026 / From private islands and airstrips to off-grid hideaways and underground bunkers, Britain’s property market has a few options for those who would rather have a contingency plan than a contingency plan for their contingency plan.

The latest research from LandSale has explored Britain’s land and property listings through an apocalyptic lens, identifying everything from £1.6m airstrips to £29,000 plots of riparian land that could appeal to anyone entertaining the idea of escaping civilisation, should the robots ever get a little too clever for their own good.

With growing public conversation around artificial intelligence and the risks of increasingly powerful technology, LandSale has taken a wry look at the types of properties that might appeal to a hypothetical end-of-the-world survivalist.

The analysis examined a snapshot of LandSale’s internal listings data for Great Britain (12th October 2026) comparing median asking prices, average property sizes and average days on the market across selected land and specialist property categories.*

The ultimate escape plan comes with a £1.6m price tag

For those who want to make a truly dramatic exit, airstrips top the list of specialist properties examined, with a median asking price of £1.6 million. At an average size of 82.5 acres, an airstrip could offer plenty of room to manoeuvre, although prospective buyers may wish to check whether their preferred getaway vehicle comes with wings.

For a more aquatic approach to surviving the end of civilisation, fishing lakes have a median asking price of £600,000 and an average size of 29.2 acres. With the prospect of a fishing rod, a little patience and hopefully a reliable supply of bait, this could be an appealing option for anyone planning to wait out the chaos in relative peace.

Smallholdings offer another potential survivalist solution, with a median asking price of £650,000 and an average size of 14.4 acres. While the price sits between the two categories above, the attraction is more practical: space to grow food, keep livestock and develop a degree of self-sufficiency. Of course, buyers would still need the skills, equipment and patience to make it work. An allotment does not automatically make you a post-apocalyptic farmer.

Islands offer the ultimate digital detox

For anyone whose ideal survival strategy involves putting as much water as possible between themselves and the rest of the world, private islands could be worth a look. Island listings have an average asking price of £190,000 and an average size of 250.3 acres, making it a particularly intriguing option for those dreaming of a secluded retreat.

Island For Sale - Drake's Island, Plymouth, PL1, asking price of £2 million

Off-grid living without the luxury price tag

The good news is that many apocalypse land options come at a relatively accessible price point. Off-grid properties, for example, command an average asking price of £410,000, while hunting land comes at a price of just £75,000 and docks cost an average of £65,000.

Bunkers and rivers: practical thinking or extreme prepping?

For buyers who prefer their escape plans to come with a roof, bunkers have a median asking price of £41,000. That may sound reassuringly affordable for a dedicated hideaway, but buyers would need to establish exactly what is included, as well as checking the property's condition, access, ventilation and suitability for its intended use.

Rivers have a median asking price of £45,000, while riparian land, which is land associated with a riverbank, has a median asking price of £29,000. Both categories may appeal to buyers drawn to water and seclusion, although ownership does not automatically confer unrestricted access to water or the right to use it however they wish.

Founder of LandSale, Adam Morris, commented:

“If the headlines about AI ever leave you wondering whether it might be time to develop a Plan B, Britain's property market has some wonderfully imaginative options. You could buy an island, find a smallholding, invest in an off-grid retreat or go all in on a bunker. Just remember that even the most elaborate survival plan is going to need a reliable water supply, a decent food source and someone who knows how to grow a potato.

On a serious note, these listings show the variety of land and specialist properties available across Britain. You don't need to be preparing for the end of the world to see the appeal of more space, greater independence or a quieter way of life. Although, if you do happen to own a bunker, now might be a good time to check the Wi-Fi.”
