Governor Ron DeSantis and the State of Florida Must Keep Diverse Student Pipeline Operational to Support DE&I STEM and Other Professional Career Paths or Risk National Security Issues

ORLANDO, FLORIDA / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 16, 2023 /

Executive Summary:

  1. Call to Action - Florida must keep the Diverse STEM pipeline activated for many national security reasons. Just last week, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida government just shut off diverse student pipeline NOW NEED more than ever for critical operations required to support America national security.
  2. Why/ THE STAT - Currently, roughly 750,000 cybersecurity professionals and growing have unfilled positions need to both help companies tackle cybersecurity issues AND schools meet the growing need for educators/ administrative staff to protect school buildings from growing ransomware threats IN THE UNITED STATES. If it were measured as a country, then cybercrime — which is predicted to inflict damages totaling $8 trillion USD globally in 2023 — would be the world’s third-largest economy after the U.S. and China. Cybersecurity Ventures expects global cybercrime costs to grow by 15 percent per year over the next three years, reaching $10.5 trillion USD annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion USD in 2015. This represents the greatest transfer of economic wealth in history, risks the incentives for innovation and investment, is exponentially larger than the damage inflicted from natural disasters in a year, and will be more profitable than the global trade of all major illegal drugs combined. For example - Without qualified/continual education needed for future jobs in the diverse STEM pipeline the US will face national security issues.
  3. The Analogy - Future "Einsteins" cover all race and ethnicity backgrounds (BELLSHAPED CURVE OF PHYSICS RELATED TO INTELLIGENCE).Cutting off the student diversity STEM pipeline will create serious barriers needed to expedite future "Einsteins" to enrich America/innovation/value-creation to help all Americans as the "world's largest economy..." The (THINK "Hidden Figures" and NASA SPACE PROGRAM and finding diverse black women like Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan that helped shape America and future generations - especially in FLORIDA - to meet critical targets. How will we not be able to find the best in America through all resources and all diversities - AMERICAN DREAM?

BACKGROUND

Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of the "All the People of Florida'-- took a major step backwards in a number of critical actions that could have significant national security efforts across a wide range of professional and government sectors that could impact cybersecurity infrastructure, governance over the capital markets and danger to the nation's healthcare services by cutting off DIVERSITY PIPELINE TO EDUCATION or more directly - DIVERSITY STEM PIPELINE?

American founding father Benjamin Franklin who, in 1754, published a cartoon, “Join or Die,” depicted a snake severed into pieces that symbolized the American colonies. Why in our times would American cut off several pieces of America for the UNITY OR THE COUNTRY? With the War in Ukraine raising the issue between DEMOCRACY and DICTATORSHIP and the critical elements contained within both realms below -- why would Florida or other democratic countries "cut off" the diversity pipeline to education when we need to best possible professionals needed especially in such areas as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (DIVERSITY STEM) and accounting, law and medicine to provide better access to better representation in our country for top professionals? The nation is under cybersecurity attack and America -- and other democratic countries for protection across public and private sectors from Russia and other agents.

Why is this so important > Currently, roughly 750,000 cybersecurity professionals and growing have unfilled positions need to both help companies tackle cybersecurity issues AND schools meet the growing need for educators/ administrative staff to protect school buildings from growing ransomware threats IN THE UNITED STATES. Literally, as outlined by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development - Russia's war against Ukraine is causing a humanitarian, social and economic crisis for the Ukrainian people. The consequences of this full-scale military invasion are disrupting the global supply of commodities, sharply increasing food and energy prices, and threatening the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic including the EU, NATO and US interest - The DEBATE BETWEEN DEMOCRACY AND DICTATORSHIP in our time...

Background:

For Florida students who are concerned that they will not be able to study courses in the diversity, equity and inclusion programs that were just defunded by new legislation -- Gov. Ron DeSantis has a suggestion in the local newspaper yesterday-- "Go to Berkeley," DeSantis and signed the new law banning state funding for DEI programs at Florida's public universities, staging the event at New College of Florida, which the governor has transformed into a conservative higher education experiment by revamping the board, which then appointed a DeSantis ally as president. DeSantis also signed HB 931 and SB 240, which prohibit Florida colleges from requiring students, faculty or staff to sign in support of DEI and expand apprenticeship programs, respectively – especially directed to cutting the ties between DE&I and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) directed to critical US infrastructure/ innovation and economic prosperity.

Why? Because Cutting Off the Nation’s DE&I Student Pipeline is a Critical Nation to Security in several ways..

First, in February 2023 a global ransomware outbreak has scrambled servers belonging to Florida's Supreme Court (FLORIDA STATE GOVERNMENT) and several universities in the U.S. and Central Europe, according to a Reuters analysis of ransom notes posted online to stricken servers - possibly Russia.

SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY CYBERSECURITY CRISIS IN FLORIDA AND NATION >

According to Allan Liska, intelligence analyst at threat intelligence vendor Recorded Future, 131 school systems across the world were attacked in 2020, 162 in 2021 and 177 in this past year. These growing numbers contrast those of other sectors. Ransomware attacks have already taken a toll on these schools. A 2022 report from U.S. Accountability Office recorded a loss in three days to three weeks of learning following a cyberattack. A school's recovery time of replacing computer hardware and cybersecurity enhancement spans from about two to nine months, with costs between $50,000 to $1 million, excluding a ransom payment.

Second, also in February 2023, Jen Easterly, Director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said – “We need to continue to be vigilant, keep our shields up, and ensure that we are putting all those controls in place” as the nation needs to protect against potential Russian cyberattacks as the war with Ukraine presses on “we can’t assume that won’t happen going forward.”

It’s very clear – students in the pipeline for cybersecurity careers are woefully unprepared to tackle the growing threat to the nation regarding cybercrime and ransomware. High schools and universities are not set-up to prepare for students and our parents are not capable explaining how the type of skills or funding that can help students move into this pipeline. And we need diverse students FRONT AND CENTER NOW…

SOLUTION > Good news is that the United States recognizes a cybersecurity crisis and through efforts like the National Science Foundation (NSF) for education funding ($1.3billion in 2023) that is being allocated through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to support directly to students to support cybersecurity education and awareness to safeguard America and professionals in accounting, law and medicine.

DIVERSITY IN STEM PIPELINE is also one of the foundational elements for innovation and discovery for America. Diversity in technical fields helps people study things from new perspectives. Each person brings their experiences, questions and understanding of the world together, resulting in discoveries and better results. More than ever we need DIVERSITY STEM ASP to protect America...

BUT FLORIDA IS TURNING OFF THE DIVERSITY PIPELINE – ESPECIALLY WHEN WE NEED ALL HANDS-ON-DECK TO PROTECT AMERICA at this special time facing America and the world. Just look at the UKRAINE WAR or SUDAN in AFRICA front in center...

My previous article outlines both the major need to support diversity, equity and inclusion for the accounting profession, as well as the legal profession.

Today, just four of the large accounting firms in the nation generate approximately $100 billion a year in revenue to support the nation’s economy but only 2% of all U.S. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are Black. The percentage of African American lawyers has remained mostly stagnant for the past decade, accounting for only 5% of the legal profession; and only about 5.7% of physicians in the United States identify as Black or African American, according to the latest data from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Diversity in the pipeline to support professionals is critical and professional associations are working diligently recognizing the need NOW to support a diverse pipeline to support the public interest.

What about the US’ Diverse and Growing Population and why is diversity so critical to the nation’s economy right now?

What we know today – is that the United States had an official estimated resident population of 333,287,557 on July 1, 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[12] This figure includes the 50 states and the District of Columbia but excludes the population of five unincorporated U.S. territories (Puerto RicoGuam, the U.S. Virgin IslandsAmerican Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands) as well as several minor island possessions. Today, the United States is the third most populous country in the world.[13  According to US Census - population growth is fastest among minorities as a whole, and according to the Census Bureau's estimation for 2020, 50% of U.S. children under the age of 18 are members of ethnic minority groups.[21]

As of 2020, White Americans are a racial majority, with non-Hispanic whites representing 57.8% of the population. Hispanic and Latino Americans are the largest ethnic minority, comprising 18.7% of the population, while Black or African Americans are the second largest racial minority, making up 12.1%.[6]

BUT - This figure does not include two significant demographic groups not represented that also needs to be added – In August 1959, Hawaii officially became the fiftieth US state. Since then, Honolulu has not only remained its largest city, but is the US city with the highest share of Asian-Americans in its population in the state. Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, and Filipinos live in the city in large numbers. The demographics of Asian Americans describe a heterogeneous group of people in the United States who can trace their ancestry to one or more countries in East, South, or Southeast Asia.[58] Because they compose 7.3% of the entire U.S. population, the diversity of the group is often disregarded in media and news discussions of "Asians" or of "Asian Americans".[59

If you also add LGBTQ Americans into the equation– according Gallup Poll - 7.2% of the US population is represented. Several other sources estimate around 10% of the US population or what we say – “intersectionality” – I may be a White American but I am also a minority representative of the LGBTQIA community. Another perspective would remove outdated language from the government's current racial and ethnic data policy, including "Negro" as a term to describe the "Black" category and "Far East" to describe a geographic region of origin for people of Asian descent. The terms "majority" and "minority" would also no longer be used, echoing a move the Census Bureau announced in 2021 to better describe the country's changing demographics.

So let this sink in – ADD THE MATH…

18.7% - Hispanic and Latino Americans

12.1% - Black or African Americans

7.3% - Asian American

7.2% - LGBTQ

_________________

45.3 % of the estimated US population (This number does not include women) that is also considered a minority under DE&I STEM efforts.

This puts the White Americans in the USA population at close to 50% of the US population and the need to create a diverse pipeline linked to growing communities is critical RIGHT NOW to help create new and better jobs through education...

Women Business Owners Are Becoming Mainstream in American and their economic and political power continues to grow and why women need to be included in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts NOW at Florida colleges and universities.

As of January 2017, there are an estimated 11.6 million (11,615,600) women-owned businesses in the United States that employ nearly 9 million (8,985,200) people and generate more than $1.7 trillion ($1,663,991,700,000) in revenues to the US economy. Over the past 20 years (1997–2017), the number of women-owned businesses has grown 114% compared to the overall national growth rate of 44% for all businesses. Women-owned businesses now account for 39% of all U.S. firms, employ 8% of the total private sector workforce and contribute 4.2% of total business revenues… The combination of women-owned businesses and firms equally-owned by men and women account for 47% of all businessesToday, it is possible over 50% of all businesses in the United States owned by women.

JUST LET THIS SINK IN – WHY CUT THIS DIVERSITY PIPELINE OFF to better support financial inclusion for the capital markets that SUPPORTS DEMOCRACY. Why CUT OFF THE DIVERSE STUDENT PIPELINE - when - 50% of U.S. children UNDER THE AGE OF 18 are NOW members of ethnic minority groups.

Our American revolution was centered on the concept of REPRESENTATION / DEMOCRACY/ INCLUSION - NOW THE MAJORITY OF INCOMING STUDENTS INTO THE DE&I PIPELINE TO COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES...

What about the nation’s Hispanic Business Owners and its connection to diversity, equity and inclusion and why it needs to be included in the importance of the US economy? The nation's second largest minority population in America?

The $1.5 trillion Hispanic market is the second-fastest growing minority market in the U.S., rising by 212 percent, or $500 billion, since 2000, according to the University of Georgia study.

The $1.5 trillion Hispanic market is the largest ethnic market in the U.S., and includes more than one out of every six Americans. It is the second-fastest growing minority market in the U.S., rising by 212 percent, or $500 billion, since 2000. Mexican Americans comprise the largest of the Hispanic subgroups, accounting for $881 billion in buying power or 57.2 percent of the Hispanic total. Puerto Ricans are second-largest group in terms of buying power, commanding $158 billion or 10.3 percent of the Hispanic market. Central Americans are the third largest, with a $137 billion market share or 8.9 percent of the total. South Americans rank fourth, with 8.7 percent ($135 billion) of the U.S. Hispanic market, and Cuban Americans are fifth, accounting for $83 billion.

Women Business Owners Becoming Mainstream in American and their economic and political power continues to grow and why women need to be included in corporate human capital disclosures to promote better diversity and inclusion:

As of January 2017, there are an estimated 11.6 million (11,615,600) women-owned businesses in the United States that employ nearly 9 million (8,985,200) people and generate more than $1.7 trillion ($1,663,991,700,000) in revenues. Over the past 20 years (1997–2017), the number of women-owned businesses has grown 114% compared to the overall national growth rate of 44% for all businesses. THE 2017 STATE OF WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES REPORT Commissioned by American Express

Hispanic Business Owners and its connection to diversity, equity and inclusion and why it needs to be included in corporate company disclosures:

The $1.5 trillion Hispanic market is the second-fastest growing minority market in the U.S., rising by 212 percent, or $500 billion, since 2000, according to the University of Georgia study.

The $1.5 trillion Hispanic market is the largest ethnic market in the U.S., (larger than the UK economy or ... the State of Texas economy for representation) and includes more than one out of every six Americans.

The African-American Business Owners and its connection to diversity, equity and inclusion and why it needs to be included in our world’s largest economy (USA)? African American buying power has seen impressive gains since the end of the last economic downturn, jumping from $961 billion in 2010 to an estimated $1.3 trillion in 2018. Since 2000, the African American market has seen a 114 percent increase in buying power. The boost is the result of a surge in African American-owned businesses, increased educational attainment and booming population growth. The percentage of African Americans who completed college continues to rise (23 percent in 2017, up from 17 percent in 2000), and the population is growing at 22.7 percent since 2000, faster than the national average of 16.3 percent. The youthfulness of the African American population skews the group’s buying power downward, as a larger share of the population have yet to hit their peak earning years.

Asian-American Business Owners and its connection to diversity, equity and inclusion and why it needs to be included in corporate company disclosures: A record 20 million Asian Americans trace their roots to more than 20 countries in East and Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Asian Americans have an estimated 6.2 percent of the total U.S. buying power, roughly $1 trillion. Asian Americans' buying power has increased 267 percent since 2000, making the Asian American market the fastest-growing minority market in the United States.

Lastly, from a demographics perspective – LGBTQ Business owners and its relationship to diversity, equity & inclusion and our community’s growing economic community… There are an estimated 1.4 million American LGBTQ business owners in the USA. LGBTQ input to the economy is over $1.7 trillion. That would make LGBTQ Americans the 10th largest economy in the world. For a little perspective, that’s bigger than the economies of Australia, Canada, and South Korea combined. More than 75 percent of LGBTQ adults and their friends, family, and relatives say they would switch to brands that are known to be LGBTQ friendly. In 2017 alone, the LGBTQ consumer buying power was over $917 billion.

On another important note roughly 11 countries have passed laws to be killed (capital punishment) just for being LGBTQ+ human being > Russia late last year requires criminalization just for being LGBTQ+ sent to the Ukraine front line as prisoners. Human rights is all rights/ all persons

What’s the deal in Florida?

According to the 2020 census, the racial distributions are as follows; 51.5% Non-Hispanic White, 26.6% of the population are Hispanics or Latino (of any race), 14.5% African American, 4% Native American, and 2.3% Asian, Oriental and other. Again, this does not include LGBTQIA… This figure is at EQUAL or slightly less of the population in Florida -- identify as minorities NOW a MAJORITY...

Bottomline - The accounting does not add up! DEI student and faculty hiring efforts are but cheap talk without corresponding efforts to build the BUSINESS PIPELINE.

So where are we now …

Today, more than 1,200 universities offer four-year or above degrees in physical science, nearly 800 offer four-year or above degrees in engineering and more than 1,800 offer four-year or above degrees in business administration and management. Without DE&I efforts at colleges and universities for all these institutions there are significant STEM crisis issues facing America.

What we know today is compare data with the number of doctorate recipients in these disciplines. According to National Science Foundation data, of 6,247 doctorate recipients in physical and earth sciences in 2020, only 79 were Black and 246 Hispanic. Even in non-STEM fields such as business, the situation is dire; more than 1,800 institutions with four-year business programs vied for 150 Black, Hispanic or Native American new doctorate recipients in 2020. To further advance equity within the nation’s educational centers we must as a nation, cultivate a workforce that draws from the full diversity of the Nation. To support the FULL POTENTIAL OF THE CAPITAL MARKETS for a better economy and new jobs.

While discussing the diversity; that came into existence in 1940, the civil rights movement in 1960 successfully extended further opportunities for cultural and ethnic diversity in the workplace. However, looking towards the evolution of the concept of diversity till 2022, it took decades for all business leaders to understand the value and meaning of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Priming the DE&I pipeline is a critical national interest to better connect to our thriving diverse marketplaces in the United States. Connect the dots between diverse students through colleges and universities and connect back to the business community.

SEE MY PREVIOUS ARTICLE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF DE&I PIPELINE SUPPORT TO BOTH STEM AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO SUPPORT INCLUSION AND REPRESENTATION.

CONCLUSION/ CALL TO ACTION TO SUPPORT DE&I STUDENT PIPELINE MORE THAN EVER FOR UNITY/ INCLUSION/ REPRESENTATION -

Why representation/ diversity is so critical?

The question of our time is between democracy and dictatorships and the question of "representation" becomes even more critical. "Representation" - meaning the concept in broad terms meaning "political factions." President James Madison author of "The Federal Papers" strongly defended the form of republican government proposed by the Constitution in his essay.

"Political fractions" include gender, race, ethnicity, origin, sexual orientation and socio-economic backgrounds are all facets of "representation" in America and respected under the operation of a government. Schools, depending upon their own unique circumstances focus on all or a subset of these areas at a high level - it's critical worthy on consideration one critical function related to creation of new pipelines of opportunity to locate possible future "Einsteins" to be nurtured, included, unified and connected for a better nation/ professional world (Think "Bell Shape Curve of Intelligence" SEE GRAPH BELOW on RACE AND Intelligence, or Sexual Orientation AND Intelligence... where do we find the future "EINSTEIN" unless we support DIVERSITY STEM now... ) is regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, origin and socio-economic background. Our job is to Why disrupt "physics of law" for the importance of diverse pipelines for a better democratic country so we have the best professional members in our society to provide the most critical skills required to protect America but also allow for "free enterprise" / impact investing/ human capital alpha investing.

So we ask in FLORIDA -- why move BACKWARDS against both constitutional laws and the law of physics against representation and the concept of INTERSECTIONALITY across gender, race, ethnicity, origin, and socio-economic background are all facets of "representation."

Governor DeSantis's actions must be stopped now and we as a nation continue to emphasize the important need for a diverse pipeline of students and professionals in fields like cybersecurity, accounting and law to protect the nation's interests and promote economic prosperity, free enterprise, innovation, different points of view, education, academia, choice, thriving capital markets, THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD as the THIRD LARGEST COUNTRY OF THE WORLD - leader of the free...The American Dream for everyone.
