UK / AGILITYPR.NEWS / April 25, 2026 / Sharing the latest from Everest Base Camp this morning, as the situation in the Khumbu Icefall continues to develop and may affect the 2026 climbing season.
SPCC has confirmed that approximately 40% of the icefall section above the rockfall point has already collapsed, with the remaining 60% still unstable. A helicopter inspection this morning showed that conditions remain unsafe for route setting. A joint ground inspection with the EOA team is planned for tomorrow, followed by a meeting at the SPCC camp to determine next steps.
We’re working with Kenton Cool, the British mountaineer preparing for his 20th summit of Everest. He has been providing clear, level‑headed context on what this means for climbers, Sherpas, and the season ahead. His insights are available for use in your reporting.
Key quotes from Kenton Cool:
• “The Icefall Doctors have been struggling to find a safe route. Their preferred line is threatened by the serac, and they’ve deemed it too dangerous for Sherpas and clients to navigate.”
• “The icefall is now more than two weeks late opening, delaying work higher on the mountain and stopping climbers from acclimatising.”
• “Depending on the next assessment, either a route is opened in the coming days, or the season ends before it begins.”
• “With the memory of 2014 still in everyone’s minds, safety has to come before everything else. The mountain will decide — and we have to listen.”
Kenton is available for comment or a short background briefing from Base Camp if helpful for your next update.
If you'd like the latest imagery, video from Base Camp, or further analysis from Kenton as inspections continue tomorrow, I can provide that (providing the wifi cooperates). I also have the following assets if required: https://www.springpr.com/client-rooms/kenton-cool
