Rare Planet of the Apes Production-Used Costume and Prop Expected to Fetch Thousands of Pounds at Ewbank’s Auctions
UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / February 16, 2021 / Fewer than 20 of these chimpanzee costumes were made for the entire original Planet of the Apes series, starting in 1968. It appears to be one made for the lead female character Dr Zira, as played by Kim Hunter.
Comprising a tunic with inner cuffs extending beyond sleeves, elasticated skirt, five-toed boots, and all presented on a realistic custom-made female ape mannequin with silicon head, it even includes hand-punched hair and glass eyes.
It is an extremely rare survival and will appear as a highlight in the Entertainment Memorabilia & Movie Props auction at Ewbank’s on February 25, estimated at £3,000-5,000.
Consigned alongside it by the same collector is a rifle also used in the production. A modified M1 Carbine, it is painted in a wood effect with leather strap and is 35 inches long. The estimate is £4,000-6,000.
Among the other highlights in the sale are the original foyer doors for the Abbey Road studios in London, through which all those who recorded there, including The Beatles, would have passed on their way to the recording studios and sound booths.
