UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / October 01, 2026 / Halloween has grown into a genuinely significant retail event in recent years, with last year's six-week season worth more than £65m according to recent data. This year's date falls on a weekend and coincides with October half-term - a combination expected to concentrate spending even further into a short window.
Leading supplier of material handling equipment Pallet Truck Shop says the timing underlines a problem many smaller retailers and wholesalers face every year: a huge amount of demand arriving, and needing to be fulfilled, in a very short space of time.
Research shows that 57% of UK Halloween shoppers only start planning their purchases around a week before the event itself. For retailers, that means stock must be picked, moved and put out for sale extremely quickly once demand materialises, rather than building gradually over weeks.
This kind of short, sharp spike tests handling equipment in a different way to a longer, more predictable peak like Christmas, since there's very little time to recover if something slows the operation down.
Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Pallet Truck Shop, said, "Halloween doesn't get talked about in the same breath as Christmas or Black Friday, but for a lot of smaller retailers it's become a genuinely important few weeks, and this year's timing makes it more concentrated than usual with half-term landing at the same point.
"What catches businesses out isn't really the total volume: it's the speed. If most shoppers are only planning a week out, that's a very narrow window to get seasonal stock moved from the stockroom to the shop floor or picked and dispatched if you're selling online. A pallet truck, stacker, or table truck that's slow, unreliable, or simply not up to the job becomes a real bottleneck exactly when there's no time to work around it.
"Our advice for any retailer or wholesaler leaning into Halloween this year is to check equipment now, not once the rush has already started. It's a short season, but a badly timed equipment failure in the middle of it can cost a disproportionate amount of missed trade for how brief the window actually is."
