Lets Explore reveals top names
In the UK there are more than 60,000 babies born every year. Each baby name is recorded by the Office for National Statistics, complied into a most popular list, and published. The results reveal distinct fashions and trends, and year-on-year comparisons outline the rise and fall of popular and unusual names.
Comparing the data between Surrey and Sussex to the UK as a whole, Lets Explore Day Nursery - the new childcare facility in Horley set to open this summer - has found that half of boys and girls born in both counties have names that did not appear on the UK’s top ten list. Favoured in Surrey and Sussex, but failing to make it onto the nation’s top 10, were names such as Matilda, Rose, Evie, Daisy, Evelyn and Grace for girls, and Max, William, Teddy, Alfie, Henry, Freddie, and Theo for boys1.
Lets Explore Soft Play - the sister company adjoined to the Lets Explore Day Nursery - has also compared its 700 registered members to the current list of top children’s names. This has revealed regional trends, with the addition of Chloe, Sophia, Darcey, Edward, and Alexander in their top 10:
Ben Stephenson, Co-Founder of Lets Explore Soft Play Centre and Day Nursery, said:
“When we open our new nursery in the summer we will be welcoming an array of beautifully named local children but we thought it would be fun, while the building works are still underway, to look at what people are choosing to call their children in our local area - especially in comparison to our existing members of Lets Explore Soft Play.
“It’s interesting to see that parents in Surrey and Sussex are selecting names outside of the most common preferences, but clearly the winners are still Olivia and Amelia for the girls and Oliver and Harry for the boys.”
