The findings are based on research conducted in September 2019 as 5135 respondents around the world contributed to the latest CIPS/Hays Procurement Salary Guide and Insights Report 2020 which evaluates a range of issues in procurement. This includes the perceptions of procurement, benchmarks salaries and bonuses for different roles. The survey also highlights career aspirations and offers insights on how to attract the best talent in the profession across sectors and across the world, including South Africa. MCIPS professionals in South Africa reported higher salary levels of 55% more than buyers without membership of CIPS. MCIPS professionals earned an average of ZAR 987,857 compared to non-professionals at ZAR 636,292. MCIPS professionals (77%) were also more likely to get a bonus than non-MCIPS (59%). The disparity in across gender remains significant, and shows a poor picture of discrimination with a 38% gap between men and women. Men earned an average of R677,568 compared to women at R491,492. The reasons for the increase are unclear, and other benefits may have become more important, but the statistics show that the issue of inequality still needs addressing in the profession. In terms of bonuses, the most popular benefits South African professionals wanted was company car or car allowance at 39%; flexible working and working from home at 36% with child care fees at 31%, amongst other benefits. The reality was different. Only two of the top ten desired benefits were actually available to employees – private medical insurance and support for study/career development. In terms of skills that were regarded as the most valuable in the profession overall, communication and supplier relationship management skills were the top skills in demand across all levels apart from tactical. At senior levels this changed to leadership and stakeholder management as the most valuable as complexity in supply chains became more acute. Hemant Hariell, General Manager, CIPS South Africa said, ”The picture our report paints of the value placed on strong procurement and supply management is largely positive but there are still some challenges. In the main, these centre on internal issues such as not being seen as a business partner and not being engaged and able to input ideas from the start of a project. In reality, gaining competitive advantage through appropriate sourcing, efficiencies and effective risk management are real value-adding activities, and so business leaders are increasingly seeking procurement professionals who are able to deliver these outcomes and enhance their business.” The number of procurement and supply chain professionals in the South Africa region is expanding.
